The Walworth Farce
Written by Enda Walsh
Directed by Tom Reing
Starring Jake Blouch, Leslie Nevon Holden, Harry Smith and Bill Van Horn

Join us for an Inis Nua celebration, as we present the Philadelphia premiere of Enda Walsh’s black comedy The Walworth Farce. It is a tale told in real time, by turns hilarious and tragic, of the paradigms we create for our lives…and the lengths we go to preserve them.

We are excited to be presenting our second work by Enda Walsh, one of Ireland’s most celebrated playwrights, with a special advance deal: two-for-one tickets on 5/16 or 5/23. Simply enter code walwed or mention “Walworth Wednesday” when calling or emailing for a reservation.

Translated from the Irish language, Inis Nua means “New Island.” Our mission is to produce contemporary, provocative plays from Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales which reflect those cultures’ new identities in today’s world. Inis Nua also seeks to cultivate and produce contemporary, provocative work from American playwrights who deal with the Irish-American, Welsh-American, Scottish-American and Anglo-American experience.

185 – Boston Marriage

Today’s podcast finds us wondering if we should change our name to 1812 Radio! We love Philadelphia’s All Comedy Theatre so much that we have covered every show this season! Truly a cavalcade of stars here! Stay Tuned for a politically charged interview with the ladies of Mamet’s “Boston Marriage”, directed by Jennifer Childs! Stay Tuned!

ABOUT BOSTON MARRIAGE

From celebrated American playwright David Mamet (American Buffalo, Glengarry Glen Ross), Boston Marriage is the caustically funny story of Anna, Claire, and their Scottish maid, Catherine. Anna and Claire share a life together, but in late 19th century America, discretion and outside resources are a necessity. To that end, Anna takes up with a wealthy older man, and Claire finds her heart strings being pulled in a decidedly younger direction. These clandestine affairs set into motion a raucous series of events where classes clash and Anna and Claire have only their wits and a cache of social legerdemain to keep them from a stay at the local jail.

These women are complicated and while we certainly see their love for one another there is a nastiness about both of them that is delicious.”

Beautiful Child

Today’s podcast features the cast of Fever Dream’s production of “Beautiful Child” written by Nicky Silver.

In this Philadelphia premier presented by Fever Dream Repertory, Beautiful Child tells the story of Harry and Nan, a middle-aged couple losing their grip on the tattered remains of their marriage. Their beloved grown son Isaac arrives for what they believe to be a brief visit home but he surprises them with the request to come home on a more long-term basis. Then he tells them why: he needs them to hide him because it’s possible that his latest love affair may be publicly revealed. A “love affair,” as he calls it, with an eight-year-old boy.

Nicky Silver’s play does not settle for easy answers or obvious solutions. Isaac does not see himself as a pedophile, just a gay man in love with a boy who loves him back. Harry and Nan struggle with the shock of the revelation, the horror at the their son’s act of molestation, and growing guilt at what they think might be their own culpability. And the final question remains: how do they protect this son they love so much and still prevent him from repeating his monstrously predatory actions?
